As previously announced, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the legendary composer Gustavo Santaolalla, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in film, tv and video game scoring. Santaolalla will present his German Netflix-series LIEBES KIND(DEAR CHILD), sharing the stage with Isabel Kleefeld (director / creative producer and showrunner), Renata Salazar Ivancan (editor), Tom Spieß (producer), Christoph Becker (music supervisor) and Juan Luqui (co-composer). Santaolalla will also talk with Oscar nominated composer Gary Yershon about his career in music. He will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award of SoundTrack_Cologne, while some of his scores will be played by the 40-piece Neues Rheinisches Kammerorchester.

Composing for TV Series

Four panels at the conference will be dedicated to exploring how composers take on scoring projects for TV series, considering the specific challenges and opportunities of this format and diving into some of their most recent projects. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights from Cristóbal Tapia de Veer and Kim Neundorf, the brilliant minds behind the score of the acclaimed TV series THE WHITE LOTUS. Their session will delve into the nuances of composing for television.

Composing for Film

As part of the “Composing for Films Day” at SoundTrack_Cologne 21, guest composers will delve into, among other topics, the importance of their collaborative work with film directors. They will also share how they approach each new project as an exploration of uncharted territory, and the innovative strategies they employ in their creative processes. BAFTA-nominated composer Anthony Willis, known for his evocative scores for Emerald Fennel’s Oscar’s Winning PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, Blumhouse’s AI hit M3GAN, and Fennell’s latest psychological thriller SALTBURN, will deliver a workshop.

Composing for Video Games

This year’s festival will feature an engaging workshop talk by 3x Grammy-nominated and 2x BAFTA winning composer Austin Wintory, celebrated for his work on JOURNEY and ASSASSIN’S CREED: SYNDICATE and the interactive musical STRAY GODS. Additionally, Grammy winners Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab, renowned for their work on STAR WARS JEDI: SURVIVOR, will host a round table and workshop discussion, offering a deep dive into the world of video game music composition. Petri Alanko, a 3x BAFTA-nominated Finnish composer known for his scores in Remedy Entertainment’s psycho-thriller, ALAN WAKE, action blockbuster QUANTUM BREAK Q and the complex musical landscape of CONTROL will give a workshop and discussion. ASCAP award-winning and BAFTA-nominated composer Tom Salta will take part in the Games round table followed by a workshop ad discussion. Salta’s projects include Arkane Studios’ DEATHLOOP, Machine Games’ WOLFENSTEIN: YOUNGBLOOD & CYBERPILOT, Microsoft’s iconic HALO series (Best Original Soundtrack Award at Game Developers Conference), Ubisoft’s RED STEEL (IGN Award for Best Original Score).

Female Film Composers Class (FFCC)

In an effort to address the underrepresentation of female composers in the industry, SoundTrack_Cologne will host the Female Film Composer Class (FFCC) for the fourth consecutive year. Despite only 6% of German TV/SVOD fiction from 2015 to 2022 and 11% of European TV/SVOD fiction in 2022 being scored by women, the FFCC aims to foster inclusivity and provide vital support for female composers. This year, the FFCC will be more closely integrated with the main program of SoundTrack_Cologne 21. Taking place from Thursday, July 4th to Saturday, July 6th, the FFCC will feature selected events from the regular program alongside exclusive teachings and networking opportunities. The class will offer in-depth workshops in small groups, limited to 10 participants, ensuring personalized attention and meaningful industry connections. The participants of the FFCC will be formally introduced to the industry at the awards ceremony on Friday, July 5th.
