MovieScore Media just released a soundtrack album for the 2025 drama feature film DEEP QUIET ROOM with original music composed by HANAN TOWNSHEND (Knight of Cups, To the Wonder, Went Up the Hill, Semper Fi, The Long Game, The Vessel, Blue Miracle, Outcry).
Directed by Ko-shang Shen, starring Hsiao-chuan Chang, Ariel Lin and Shih-Chieh King, produced by Flash Forward Entertainment, Oxygen Film Studio, Wind Rises Entertainment and Citrullo International, the story follows Ming, that after the suicide of his pregnant wife, undertakes to care for his father-in-law, but discovers dark family secrets that reveal the motive behind Yi-ting’s tragic decision. The drama premiered at last year’s Pingyao International Film Festival and was released in Taiwanese theaters this past March.
“For Deep Quiet Room, director Ko-shang Shen and I spoke often about silence, not simply as the absence of sound, but as an emotional space the audience could inhabit. Much of the score was built around restraint: fragile prepared piano, sparse strings, distant resonances, and recurring melodic fragments that subtly transform as the story unfolds. The film moves through six emotional sections, each reflecting a different stage of grief, revelation, guilt, and ultimately destruction. Rather than treating these as separate musical worlds, we searched for a single thematic thread that could evolve organically alongside the characters’ inner lives. Many of the cues were approached from what Ko-shang described as a “God’s perspective” – music that observes with compassion rather than judgment. Even in the darker passages, we tried to avoid overt horror language, instead leaning into ambiguity, quiet tension, and emotional weight. The result is a score that sits delicately between intimacy and unease, mirroring the film’s exploration of buried trauma, memory, and love fractured by silence.” – Hanan Townshend
