Featuring Original Music By Christophe Beck
Lakeshore Records will release the GOOD KILL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and CD on May 12, 2015. The album features the film’s original score by Christophe Beck (FROZEN, THE HANGOVER).
GOOD KILL is the story of fighter pilot, Major Tommy Egan, who has been flying F–16’s in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is still flying missions in that part of the world but now he is doing it from the inside of a very different cockpit. He is a drone pilot, fighting the war by remote control from an air-conditioned cubicle 7,000 miles away on a base near Las Vegas. It’s about the new schizophrenia of war.
“In approaching the score, I wanted to create a certain sonic ambiguity between the two desert landscapes featured: rural Nevada and Pakistan,” explained Beck.
After fighting the Taliban. For 12 hours a day, Tommy goes home to the suburbs to feud with his wife and kids for the other 12. Set during the greatest escalation of drone strikes, it’s about the moral conflicts and dilemmas of using this new technology. But it’s very much a personal story. Tommy is becoming a casualty of a war he’s fighting from half a world away, all while in absolutely no danger. He is a pilot suffering from shell shock and grieving the death of those actually flying, while also feeling guilty that he’s so far away from the shells. He is becoming disconnected from real life, relating more to the targets he’s watching, and their families, than his own family. Most importantly, he is starting to question the mission. Is he creating more terrorists than he’s killing? Is he now engaged in a war without end?
“The lack of clarity and separation between the home and war fronts is key to understanding Tommy’s confusion and motivation in the film and seemed like the perfect window through which to share that feeling with the audience musically,” Beck described.
Christophe Beck is an Emmy-winning composer who recently scored such comedic hits as THE MUPPETS (Parts I and II), THE HANGOVER (Parts I, II and III), TOWER HEIST, THE WATCH and PITCH PERFECT. In addition to big comedies—like CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, RED, DUE DATE, DATE NIGHT —Beck has staged the drama for films like WE ARE MARSHALL, PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF, ELEKTRA, THE SENTINEL, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, and indie films including YEAR OF THE DOG, PHOEBE IN WONDERLAND, SAVED! and the award winning documentary WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. Beck’s most recent scores include THE GUILT TRIP directed by Anne Fletcher starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, the Disney short entitled PAPERMAN and the indie drama THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN starring Shia LaBeouf. Chris’ most recent work is featured in the Fox film THE INTERNSHIP directed by Shawn Levy and starring Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson, The Muppets sequel MUPPETS MOST WANTED and Disney’s animated feature FROZEN.
The Canadian composer played piano from the age of five, studied music at Yale, and attended the USC film scoring program under composers like Jerry Goldsmith. He started composing in television, at the personal recommendation of Buddy Baker, and was soon writing for BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (which led to an Emmy nomination). “I don’t tend to look under the hood too much,” Beck says about his process. “It’s really very instinctual, from-the-hip and, from an actual process point of view, improvisational.
