Looking back through the archives of our radio show, few conversations resonate quite like our sit-down with award-winning film composer Laurent Eyquem for a special CITY LIGHTS Radioshow – Composer of the Month.
Laurent Eyquem is an award-winning French film score composer, conductor, and orchestrator celebrated for his highly melodic, lyrical, and rich orchestral style. Unlike many contemporary composers who rely heavily on electronic synthesis, Eyquem’s trademark sound is heavily rooted in classical orchestration, drawing industry comparisons to legends like Georges Delerue, John Barry, and Jerry Goldsmith. He is unique in that he serves as his own lead orchestrator and conductor on all his projects.
In 2011, he scored the biographical drama Winnie Mandela. This score was notable because Eyquem was granted the rare privilege of recording with the Soweto Gospel Choir and arranging the theme song performed by Jennifer Hudson. He also composed the sweeping score for the international World War I docudrama series 14 Diaries of the Great War (2014).
Eyquem achieved massive critical acclaim within the film music community for scoring director Ron Maxwell’s American Civil War drama, Copperhead (2013). Conducted with the Hollywood Studio Symphony, the lush score earned Eyquem the Breakthrough Composer of the Year award from the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) and a “Discovery of the Year” nomination at the World Soundtrack Awards.
