Decca Records has released the official soundtrack for the highly anticipated Studiocanal film The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan, available now on all platforms. Also available to pre-order now is the physical CD and Vinyl. Award-winning composers John Gürtler and Jan Miserre have crafted a deeply immersive score that captures the wild beauty of the Orkney Islands, blending harp, strings, flute, and double bass clarinet with modular synthesizers and drones. Their innovative approach shines through in the film, seamlessly weaving music into its emotional fabric. Collaborating with musicians like Malin Lewis and Thomas Bloch, Gürtler and Miserre employed experimental instruments to create a score that not only enhances the narrative but also showcases their unique style. The Outrun soundtrack is available everywhere now, with the film hitting theaters on September 27th in the UK and October 4th in the US.
JOHN GÜRTLER AND JAN MISERRE note “This collaboration with Nora Fingscheidt holds great significance for us, and it was thrilling to be involved from the very beginning. We had the unique opportunity to compose and record ideas before filming even started, with much of the music being played on set to create the atmosphere, whether in clubs or on cliffs. To give voice to Rona’s internal journey, we used the haunting sounds of the Cristal Baschet and the Ondes Martenot. Meanwhile, the Orcadian landscape and its rich folklore were conveyed through traditional Scottish musical textures. Between these two extremes, we incorporated a wide range of elements, from field recordings and self-built instruments to electronica and a full orchestra.”
ABOUT THE OUTRUN
A vivid and unflinching adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s wrenching personal memoir of addiction, powered by an extraordinary central performance from Saoirse Ronan. Addicted to hedonism, drink and drugs, a young woman must wrestle with recovery in the remote islands of Orkney whilst reckoning with her complex family history. Powered by a pounding soundtrack, a kinetic visual style and intricate narrative structure, this extraordinarily moving film is redemptive, cathartic and utterly riveting.
