Invada Records released today the Original Score Soundtrack for Paramount’s darkly satirical thriller Bad Apples, starring Saoirse Ronan. Scored by acclaimed composer Chris Roe, the album delivers a wildly inventive fusion of classical precision and experimental sonic chaos that serves as the pulse of the film. Arriving alongside the movie’s global theatrical premiere today, the complete soundtrack is available now across all major digital streaming platforms.
Director Jonatan Etzler shares “What I love about Chris’ music is that he is a classically trained composer, but he is very interested in pushing the boundaries of what you can do. He’s a calm controlled guy, but his music has a real cheekiness and a very crazy, absurdist feel to it that I just respond really well too and I think works really well for this film.”
Roe remarks, “Jonatan really loves his music, and in Bad Apples he wanted the score to be bold, experimental and to feel like a real character in the film: the best brief that any composer could get! I wanted the score to help build a surreal world, almost giving permission for the audience to laugh from the start, as well as ramping up the tension as the story gets crazier and crazier. I love the moral ambiguity in the script, and it’s a sign of how brilliant Saoirse is that you’re rooting for her despite the terrible decisions she makes.”
ABOUT BAD APPLES
Maria, a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds, is stifled by one unruly and chaotic student. With her career in question and the child’s behavior spiraling, she makes a series of questionable decisions that lead to her accidentally taking and locking this “bad apple” in her home. Maria tries desperately to backtrack, but when the class starts flourishing and the staff and parents are thrilled with the improvement, she finds herself in a very complicated predicament.
ABOUT CHRIS ROE
Chris Roe is an Ivor Novello-nominated composer whose work combines an acoustic palette with a contemporary edge. A classically trained pianist and string player with a love for experimental music, Chris is equally at home working with a full orchestra as with a broken tape machine or vintage synth and is meticulous in building a distinctive palette for each project.
His most recent credits include the Paramount dark comedy-thriller Bad Apples starring Saoirse Ronan. Chris’ previous film work has included The Salt Path starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, Blue Jean (winning the audience award at the Venice Film Festival) as well as scoring BAFTA-winning film After Love.
In TV, Chris has recently scored true crime thriller The Ladyfor The Crown producers Left Bank Pictures as well as new Anthony Horowitz thriller series Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue for MGM+/BBC. He has previously scored 6-part thriller Wolf for BBC 1 as well as all four series of Jed Mercurio’s Trigger Point and Payback, also with HTM Television.
In the documentary space, Chris has collaborated twice with Ridley Scott Associates and Netflix, scoring the series Surviving Black Hawk Down and the International Emmy-nominated series Robbie Williams, which earned Chris a Music+Sound Award nomination for Best Original Score.
