SNFCC Cosmos concert series present the renowned pianist and Oscar-nominated film composer Hauschka, who will present a retrospective of his work 

Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann) is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who uses prepared piano as his primary instrument. The prepared piano refers to the technique of resting pieces of paper, marbles, drumsticks and other objects on the strings to produce odd, sometimes randomly generated sounds that move the instrument in unexpected directions.

For Hauschka every musical work is therefore a momentary recording of his activities in the here and now. Similar to a hike it’s often first in looking back, that the way reveals its ‘meaning’. So too with Hauschka’s compositions – it’s often on looking back at the process of their creation that their sense crystallises.

His albums of prepared piano music include The Prepared Piano, Ferndorf, Salondes Amateurs and Silfra.

In 2014 Hauschka released Abandoned City which was followed by A NDO C Y, a collection of solo improvisations. Hauschka’s latest release, What if (2017) finds him adding player pianos to his armoury, something that he has also been exploring in his live performances following the album’s release. His new album  A Different Forest consisting of melodic solo piano works, will be released in early 2019.

In recent years Hauschka has also built a prolific career writing scores for films, coming to international prominence in this field through his soundtrack for the hit film Lion in 2016. Scored in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran, the soundtrack was nominated for numerous awards including an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA. His other recent soundtrack work includes the films Hotel Mumbai (premiered at the Toronto Film Festival 2018), Adrift (2018), In Dubious Battle (2016), Exodus (2016) & Praia do Futuro (2014); and music for the new US TV mini-series Patrick Melrose (2018) starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Η σειρά συναυλιών Cosmos του ΚΠΙΣΝ παρουσιάζει τον Hauschka, πιανίστα και συνθέτη υποψήφιο για Όσκαρ, σε μια αναδρομή στο έργο του

Ο Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann) είναι συνθέτης, τραγουδοποιός και πειραματικός μουσικός με βασικό του όργανο το προετοιμασμένο πιάνο (prepared piano): Ένα πιάνο στο οποίο τοποθετούνται χαρτί, βόλοι, μπαγκέτες και άλλα αντικείμενα πάνω στις χορδές ώστε να παράγουν ασυνήθιστους, μερικές φορές τυχαία δημιουργούμενους ήχους, που οδηγούν το μουσικό αυτό όργανο σε απροσδόκητες κατευθύνσεις.

Για τον Hauschka, κάθε μουσικό έργο είναι μια στιγμιαία καταγραφή των δραστηριοτήτων του, εδώ και τώρα. Όπως και στην πεζοπορία, που συχνά το νόημα της διαδρομής αποκαλύπτεται όταν κοιτάμε πίσω, έτσι και με τις συνθέσεις του Hauschka: Συχνά, όταν στρεφόμαστε πίσω, στη διαδικασία της δημιουργίας, τότε αντιλαμβανόμαστε πλήρως τη σημασία της μουσικής του.

Στα album του με μουσική για προετοιμασμένο πιάνο περιλαμβάνονται τα: The Prepared Piano, Ferndorf, Salon des Amateurs, και Silfra.

Το 2014, ο Hauschka κυκλοφόρησε το Abandoned City και ακολούθησε το A NDO CY, μια συλλογή με σόλο αυτοσχεδιασμούς. Το 2017 με το What If (2017) προσθέτει στην παλέτα του το μηχανικό πιάνο, το οποίο εξερευνά πια και στις συναυλίες του. To νέο του άλμπουμ, Α Different Forest, περιλαμβάνει μια σειρά από συνθέσεις για σόλο πιάνο και θα κυκλοφορήσει στις αρχές του 2019.

Με ανεξάντλητη έμπνευση, ο Hauschka έχει δώσει το στίγμα του ως κινηματογραφικός συνθέτης, κερδίζοντας διεθνή αναγνώριση με τη μουσική για την επιτυχημένη ταινία Lion (2016). Το soundtrack αυτό, για το οποίο συνεργάστηκε με τον Dustin O’Halloran, ήταν υποψήφιο για Όσκαρ, Χρυσή Σφαίρα και BAFTA. Στην πρόσφατη μουσική του για τον κινηματογράφο περιλαμβάνονται οι ταινίες Hotel Mumbai (πρεμιέρα στο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Τορόντο 2018), Adrift (2018), In Dubious Battle (2016), Exodus (2016) και Praia do Futuro (2014), καθώς και μουσική για τη νέα αμερικανική τηλεοπτική μίνι σειρά Patrick Melrose (2018) με πρωταγωνιστή τον Benedict Cumberbatch.
