Music Composed by DARIO MARIANELLI

MovieScore Media adds its latest title to its Discovery Collection with the music for Michael Winterbottom’s In This World, the winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2003. The music by Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, V for Vendetta) underscores the plight of two Afghan refugees as both Enayat and his cousin Jamal embark on a perilous journey to reach London through Iran, Turkey and Italy. Based on the true story of the two central characters, Winterbottom’s movie won a lot of critical praise for dealing with a controversial subject that showed a different side of the Middle East whose role was just being reappraised in a post-9/11 world.

“Michael Winterbottom had an interesting idea, when he talked to me initially about In This World,” recalls the composer. “He wanted it to look as if it was a documentary,  but at the same time, he wanted the sound of the movie to be as immersive and powerful as we could make it, and that included the music. I think his instinct proved right: it meant not being afraid to use a fairly large orchestra, and a score that tried to have a big resonant heart.” The score features authentic Middle Eastern folk songs performed by Parvin Cox and include haunting passages for the duduk performed by Dirk Campbell.

The world premiere release of Dario Marianelli’s music for In This World coincides with the greatest refugee crisis in Europe since the second world war. “The film itself is indeed both a stark and moving piece of art that is shockingly relevant today. We should all see it as it allows us to connect to the current migration crisis on an emotional level. We tend to quickly forget that we are dealing with human beings constantly on the verge of tragedy”, album producer Mikael Carlsson says. The final piece on the album, “Elegy for Refugees”, was retitled for this presentation in honor of migrants who lost their lives during the current refugee crisis in Europe.

Born in Pisa in 1963, Dario Marianelli studied at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in England. Having scored over 40 films, including his most recent successes such as The Boxtrolls(2014) or Everest (2015), the composer is still best-known for his collaborations with director Joe Wright: both Pride & Prejudice(2005) and Anna Karenina (2012) were nominated for Academy Awards and Atonement (2007) won the coveted golden statuette in the category of Best Original Score. His previous releases with MovieScore Media include the inaugural release of the Discovery Collection I Capture the Castle (2003), the Rwanda-set war dramaBeyond the Gates (aka Shooting Dogs, 2005) and the comedy thriller Happy Now (2001).
