The story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. The film’s content is based on the two scientists’ diaries from when they had commissioned Karmakate to help them in 1909 and 1940. Eventually, the story is much about the devastation of colonialism and the effects to people and land.
Winner of the Art Cinema Award at Cannes, the film is nominated by Colombia for Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Oscars.
Beautiful transitions and landscape shots and united with field recordings of traditional songs from Venezuelan and Colombian indigenous communities and memorable music composed and performed by Nascuy Linares.
