Broken Horses, soundtrack album cover

Featuring Original Music By John Debney

Lakeshore Records will release BROKEN HORSES – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 7th and on CD May 5, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by John Debney (HOUDINI, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST). BROKEN HORSES was written, produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, marking the first time a filmmaker from India has done so.

“Having been a huge fan of Mr. Chopra’s work, I was absolutely thrilled when asked to do the score for BROKEN HORSES,” said Debney.  “Working with Vinod Chopra was one of the highlights of my career.”
Having left town as a child after the death of his father, young music prodigy, Jacob Heckum (Anton Yelchin), returns to his desolate hometown after years only to discover that Buddy (Chris Marquette), the child-like elder brother he left behind, now works for a notorious drug gang. The gang’s ruthless boss has twisted Buddy’s simple mind and manipulated him into a killer, a surrogate son who blindly does as he is told. Jacob is unable to convince Buddy to leave his new fraternity. Drowned in guilt for having abandoned him, Jacob realizes the only way to save Buddy is from the inside out. Set in the shadows of the turbulent American-Mexican border BROKEN HORSES is a gritty, epic thriller about bonds of brotherhood, laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence.

Composer John Debney is the ultimate film music character actor. In equal demand for family films like ELF as he is for adventure films like IRON MAN 2, the Oscar-nominated composer also scored the poignantly brutal THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Debney is an agile, jack-of-all-genres, composing for comedies (BRUCE ALMIGHTY), sci-fi action (PREDATORS), horror (DREAM HOUSE) and romance (VALENTINE’S DAY) with the same confidence and panache. Debney is also known for his work in such films as PRINCESS DIARIES, SIN CITY, LIAR LIAR, SPY KIDS, NO STRINGS ATTACHED, THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOCUS POCUS. Debney’s most recent work includes the Steve Jobs bio-drama JOBS, Brad Anderson’s thriller STONEHEARST ASYLUM, Ivan Reitman’s sports drama DRAFT DAY, Thomas McCarthy’s film THE COBBLER starring Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and Paramount Pictures’ animated comedy THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER. Up next for John is Disney’s THE JUNGLE BOOK, directed by Jon Favreau.

Born in Glendale, California, Debney’s professional life began after he studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts, when he went to work writing music and orchestrating for Disney Studios and various television series. He won his first Emmy in 1990 for the main theme for THE YOUNG RIDERS, and his career soon hit a gallop. Since then he has won three more Emmys (SEA QUEST DSV), and been nominated for a total of six (most recently in 2012 for his work on the Kevin Costner western miniseries HATFIELDS & MCCOYS.) His foray into videogame scoring—2007’s LAIR—resulted in a BAFTA nomination and a Best Videogame Score award from The International Film Music Critics Association. In 2005 Debney was the youngest recipient of ASCAP’s Henry Mancini Career Achievement Award.

“BROKEN HORSES is a tour de force of brilliant filmmaking and stellar acting,” Debney described.  “The attention to detail and passion shown by Vinod was infectious and inspiring. I hope to work with Vinod again and would treasure the opportunity.”

Vinod Chopra Films and Reliance Entertainment present BROKEN HORSES in theaters on April 10, 2015. BROKEN HORSES – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally on April 7th and on CD May 5, 2015.
