Music Composed by MATTHIJS KIEBOOM
MovieScore Media once again teams up with Dutch composer Matthijs Kieboom with whom the label previously released Wild, which received an International Film Music Critics Association Award nomination for Best Documentary Score. Kieboom’s latest movie, Bloody Marie tells the story of Marie Wankelmut (Susanne Wolff), a once successful comic artist who is now living among the prostitutes in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Drunken and bold, she gets into one conflict after another until a gruesome sobering event at her neighbors’ forces her to take action.
“I wanted to emphasise the loneliness Marie is dealing with and the battle with her addiction“ explains the composer. “Both storylines are translated almost one on one into the music, for Marie’s loneliness I decided to often use a solo cello on top of a very “open” musical landscape. But every now and than, when Marie is losing grip on reality, either by dreaming or being very drunk, the cello gets replaced by a Theremin, to make the musical tone a little more surreal. Her battle with alcohol is portrayed by a lot off glass – from bowing wine glasses to using them as percussive instruments.” Kieboom’s score is one of the most intriguing musical descriptions of alcoholism since Miklós Rózsa’s Oscar-nominated The Lost Weekend, which also used the theremin.
Dutch composer Matthijs Kieboom was born in 1985 in the city of Dordrecht. He started his musical education on the cello and the bass guitar before moving onto composition. His first feature film score was co-written for Fuchsia the Mini-Witch (2010). In 2011, Matthijs won the first place and the title of Transatlantyk Young Composer for 2011 at a competition created by Academy Award winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. He later won the Young Talent Award at the Krakow Film Music Festival and had his music played at the closing gala. In 2013, Matthijs collaborated with DJ Armin van Buuren on the BUMA-winning score for I Love Ibiza, the top selling Dutch movie of the year. His music for the documentary Wild is also available from MovieScore Media.
