The Original Television Soundtrack to the drama series The Guardian calls “a gloriously ridiculous thriller that slips down a treat,” THE GUEST, is now available courtesy of Silva Screen Records. Featuring a driving and dynamic score by BAFTA-nominated composer Blair Mowat (Nolly), the 19-track album releases today on music streaming platforms. The series is available on the BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Paramount+ in the US.
The Guest is a propulsive, twisting thriller that centers on the intense, toxic relationship between cleaner, Ria (Gabrielle Creevy), and her mysterious employer, Fran (Eve Myles).
As the two women’s lives become intertwined by shared secrets, an obsessive co-dependence emerges that ultimately threatens to become dangerous and manipulative – a psychological game of cat-and-mouse.
Mowat says of the score, “THE GUEST was a project I truly loved composing for. The creative team encouraged collaboration and invention, which let me lean fully into the show’s themes of class and social mobility. I wanted Ria’s experience of Fran’s world to feel exotic and aspirational, so her first tour of the house is scored with reed flute, steel drums, and unusual percussion – playful, enticing colours that draw her into a world she’s never known.”
He continues, “That palette runs throughout the show, joined by female vocals (sung by Sophy Purnell) and a Cristal Baschet I commissioned specifically for the project. Its glassy, ethereal tones were stretched and manipulated to create sensual, ambiguous atmospheres that hint at friendship, rivalry, or even romance between the two leads as the story keeps you guessing.
The score is deliberately hybrid: analogue synths and pulsing beats woven with solo strings, guitar, and other organic textures. This blend mirrors the balance of sincerity and artifice between Fran and Ria. Transforming acoustic instruments electronically became a way of reflecting the masks each character wears.
Early conversations with our writer and executive producer Matthew Barry gave me a clear sense of the emotional undercurrents, and that trust carried through the whole process. I’m proud of how the music adds a subtle but meaningful layer to a show that’s sophisticated and quietly powerful. As someone who loves soundtracks, I shaped the album with real care so it would stand on its own, and I hope listeners enjoy the score as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
