MICHAEL (1924, 86΄) by Carl Theodor Dreyer
Direction: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Screenplay: Herman Bang, Thea von Harbou
Starring: Walter Slezak, Max Auzinger, Nora Gregor
Language: German | Subtitles: English

Mikael is an artist who rises as his teacher, the aging Zoret, falls. Zoret gives Mikael his start, and their relationship is sexual as well. Then Mikael takes up with the Princess Zamikoff, selling gifts from Zoret and even stealing from the master to pay for his carnal and luxurious life with her. He abandons Zoret, whose health begins to fail but who also discovers spirituality in his solitude.

Michael (also known as Mikaël, Chained: The Story of the Third Sex, and Heart’s Desire) was a German silent film released in 1924, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, director of other notable silents such as The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), Master of the House (1925), and Leaves from Satan’s Book (1921). The film stars Walter Slezak as the titular Michael, the young assistant and model to the artist Claude Zoret (Benjamin Christensen). Along with Different From the Others (1919) and Sex in Chains (1928), Michael is widely considered a landmark in gay silent cinema.

The film is based on Herman Bang‘s 1902 novel Mikaël. It is the second screen adaptation of the book, the first being The Wings, made eight years prior by director Mauritz Stiller. Michael, however, follows Bang’s storyline much more closely than the earlier film version.

7th Silent Film Festival, 2016 : LOVE & EROTISM

Love and Eroticism in Silent Film with live music accompaniment

Artistic Direction: Alexandros Mouzas
The Michael Cacoyannis Foundation is organizing the 7th Silent Film Festival, entitled “Love and Eroticism in Silent Film” from Wednesday 22 June until Friday 1st July 2016, at 21:30, with the artistic direction of Alexandros Mouzas.

This year’s festival attempts to map the erotic element as it was evident in these great films by great creators, in different genres, from comedy to drama to adventure and exotic tales. The eroticism of silent film is subconscious, allusive, disguised, and is supported by the irresistible charm of the leading ladies or the enchanting gaze of the men. There is a constant battle between that which is proper and acceptable and that which is not, between censorship and social acceptance.
Accompanied by original musical compositions which will be performed live during the screenings, another dimension and stimulus is offered to the audience in order to enhance the atmosphere of the times.

In cooperation with the STUDIO – Parallilo Kykloma and Christos Papadimitriou.
