Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH

One of Jerry Goldsmith’s beloved early albums at last gets issued on CD from first generation stereo album masters! Accompanying this 1966 gem is world premiere of complete original film soundtrack in mono! Ida Lupino directs, Rosalind Russell, Hayley Mills star. Attending all-Catholic boarding school run by group of nuns, Mills plays pranks, romps with friends, runs afoul of Mother Superior (Russell). Running beneath humor of tale is simultaneous story about love, faith and sacrifice. As film progresses, humor dissipates and genuine heartfelt story comes to surface. Jerry Goldsmith captures both ideas in expert meld of warm humor for comic episodes, incredibly tender sensitivity during serious episodes. (Keen ears will even pick up quote of theme from Hoosiers twenty years before its time!) Goldsmith selected 12 tracks for his 1966 album, assembled them from short cues into beautiful record that covered ample territory in its 29-minute duration.

Composer Jerry Goldsmith was 36 when he composed the music for the 1966 Columbia film The Trouble with Angels, coming after his score to A Patch of Blueand right before The Blue Max.   He had not scored many comedies to that point, but still had come into a voice of his own.  He chose to compose music that acknowledged the girls’ cartoonish antics as well as their rock ’n’ roll era, but tied it all together with a versatile theme, containing an emotional sensitivity that matches the film’s sincere heart.

This release mark’s the premiere appearance of the stereo soundtrack from the original first-generation LP masters, presenting a striking clarity as heard on Intrada’s previous release, The Elmer Bernstein AVA Collection.  In addition, Sony Pictures provided the complete mono session elements, allowing Intrada to also present the entire score in mono, which includes several key musical sequences not included on the original LP.

The film was adapted from the 1962 novel Life With Mother Superior, written by New York advertising queen Jane Trahey and based on her own experiences attending a Catholic all-girls school in Chicago. Starring Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior, The Trouble with Angels opens with Mary (Hayley Mills) reluctantly arriving at St. Francis Academy for Girls. On the train she meets fellow classmate Rachel (June Harding), and suggests her first of many “scathingly brilliant ideas.” For the next four years, Mary tests the patience of Mother Superior: smoking cigarettes, complaining, putting dish soap in the nuns’ tea, giving tours of the off-limits cloister, and plenty of other miscreant mischief. Gradually, though, Mary’s heart begins to soften.

Intrada proudly offers that stereo album finally from first generation masters, exhibiting detail and clarity never before heard, courtesy Time/Mainstream Records Group. Hearing delicate ideas for solo violin, solo clarinet, combined strings with piano, other haunting sequences reminds one of Goldsmith’s immediate predecessor, A Patch Of Bluewhile actually looking forward to harmonic vernacular of following project The Blue Max. But there’s more: World premiere of complete score allows listener to hear all of Goldsmith’s cues, intentionally scored as brief, fully-rounded little vignettes, as per needs of this unique movie. We retain them all as he recorded them. Enjoy several previously unreleased cues from moving, more serious parts of score. Also enjoy beautiful choral arrangement of “Angels We Have Heard On High” that plays during key scene. A rare movie treat and a beautiful Jerry Goldsmith CD to treasure! Arthur Morton orchestrates, Fred Steiner adapts marching band arrangements, Jerry Goldsmith composes & conducts.
