Varèse Sarabande Records will release MR. TURNER – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD December 9, 2014. The soundtrack features the original score composed by Gary Yershon (HAPPY-GO-LUCKY, ANOTHER YEAR).

“Working with Mike Leigh is an honor and a pleasure,” said Yershon. “Artistically acute and musically well-informed, he is entirely collaborative, so the process of composing for his plays and films is joyfully creative.”

First collaborating with director Mike Leigh on 1999’s TOPSY-TURVY, Yershonʼs long career composing music for drama encompasses scores for the leading UK theater companies, West End and Broadway productions, radio, television and film.  His theater work includes the English-language premieres of the work of Yasmina Reza – ART, THE UNEXPECTED MAN, LIFE (X) 3, THE GOD OF CARNAGE, all of which enjoyed successful runs in the West End, on Broadway and internationally. Most recent theater includes EDWARD II (National Theatre), THE ROARING GIRL (Royal Shakespeare Company), THE LOW ROAD (Royal Court Theatre), and JULIUS CAESAR (Donmar Warehouse).  In 2009 he was nominated for a Drama Desk award for his contributions to Matthew Warchusʼ revival of THE NORMAN CONQUESTS.

Yershon’s BBC Radio commissions include scores for Simon Armitageʼs dramatizations of GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT and THE ODYSSEY, and the Sony award-winning Autumn JOURNAL. Television work ranges from children’s cartoons series (JAMES THE CAT, EBB AND FLO) to detective thrillers (TRIAL AND RETRIBUTION IX and X).  In 2010 he received a European Film Awards nomination for his score for Mike Leighʼs ANOTHER YEAR. In 2012 he became an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Gary also works as a musical director, writer, translator and teacher.

MR. TURNER explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

As a special bonus, in addition to his music for MR. TURNER the soundtrack features music from A RUNNING JUMP, a 2012 short film that Yershon also composed for Leigh. “Bringing the two scores together is terrific opportunity to let them be heard as complementary, highly-contrasted pieces, written by the same composer for the same director – I hope it gives a sense of the range of our collaboration,” said Yershon.
