Lakeshore Records will release the KITE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 30, 2014, and on CD October 21, 2014. The album features original music by Paul Hepker (TSOTSI, RENDITION).

Based on the groundbreaking, cult classic anime, KITE tells the story of Sawa (India Eisley), a young woman living in a corrupt society where crime and gangs terrorize the streets. When Sawa’s mother and policeman father are found victims of a grisly double homicide, she begins a ruthless pursuit for the man who murdered them. With the help of her father’s ex-partner, Karl Aker (Samuel L. Jackson), and a mysterious friend from her past (Callan McAuliffe), she becomes a merciless teen assassin, blasting her way through the dark world of human trafficking only to uncover a devastating truth.

“The challenge was to create an electronic score that still had heart. Capturing the aggression and edginess of an amped-up assassin is relatively simple when playing with twitchy machines – but the film demanded a musical layer that reflected our heroine’s pain, her vulnerability, her numbness,” explained Hepker.  For inspiration Hepker looked to one of his own favorite scores, BLADE RUNNER. “Vangelis’ brilliant soundtrack from Ridley Scott’s masterpiece is proof-positive that machines can have souls, that monsters can be beautiful. I hope that some of BLADE RUNNER’s DNA found is way into the score for KITE.”

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Paul Hepker trained as a concert pianist under Adolphe Hallis. A long-time member of acclaimed Los Angeles theatre company Circle X, Hepker garnered an Ovation Award, two LA Weekly Awards, and numerous nominations for his work as composer or Musical Director. In 1999 he was a Finalist in the inaugural John Lennon Songwriting Competition.

Hepker co-composed the music for TSOTSI (which won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film), RENDITION and THE BIRD CAN’T FLY.  He also scored INTO THE LIGHT- a documentary exploring the AIDS crisis in Tanzania, He has composed the music for numerous Discovery, History and National Geographic Channel series, including DEADLIEST CATCH, IRT DEADLIEST ROADS, CRASH FILES, IMPACT, AMERICA’S DEADLIEST SEASON, INTO THE FIRESTORM, RAW NATURE, IDITAROD, HERRINGS, and SHARK TAGGERS (NBC).

“My style is often associated with organic, ethno-ambient instruments occasionally layered with self-made synth textures or drumloops.  For KITE I stepped out of this ‘comfort zone’ and into the world of pre-fabbed sounds,” said Hepker.  “A film score’s primary function is to serve the film, but film music has a secondary, bonus function: it can entertain on its own – sans picture.”

Videovision Entertainment, Distant Horizon, and Detalle Films presents KITE currently available on DIRECTV and in theater and VOD on October 10, 2014.  The KITE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally September 30, 2014 and on CD October 21, 2014.
