On the score Alexander reflects, “‘I want the score to sound like water’. -Those were the first words Anna Baumgarten said to me when we met to discuss the score for Disfluency. Jane is the water of the lake where she feels at home and at peace and we had to place her there in the music. Wave-cresting chorused guitars and lake-reflected percussion are the foundation of Jane’s heartbeat; whispering intimate strings, breathing woodwinds, bowed guitars and watery kalimbas living under the surface of Jane all weave the complication of turning disruptive trauma into hope. I am truly grateful to have contributed my own authentic voice to the very personal and brave story Anna has brought into the world.”
Director Anna Baumgarten shares, “Working with Nathan Alexander on the Disfluency score was a dream. We wanted the score to reflect Jane’s heartbreaking journey with elements that rippled and flowed like the water in Jane’s lake. I only needed to listen to a few seconds before I knew that he had nailed it. I still tear up when the cello comes in when Jane’s alone for the first time in the film on her paddleboard in the middle of the lake.”
ABOUT DISFLUENCY
To everyone’s surprise, “Jane the Brain,” flunks her final college class and retreats to her Michigan hometown by the lake. Her parents, sassy older sister, townie friends, and an old high school crush soften the burden of failure as she tries to sort out what to do next. It’s not long before this misstep feels more like an opportunity at one last care-free summer vacation. She rekindles an old friendship with her neighbor Amber, a single mother with a difficult toddler, and utilizes her skills as a linguistics student–including teaching her American Sign Language–to help Amber connect with her son. Despite her best efforts, however, Jane can’t keep the real reason that caused her academic disruption bottled up. She struggles with imposter syndrome, and her PTSD boils over. With the support of those around her, Jane unravels herself and starts the never-ending healing process of life after sexual assault.
ABOUT NATHAN ALEXANDER
Self-taught guitarist and composer Nathan Alexander grew up in the wooded suburbs illuminated by New York City’s brilliant art scene, deeply influencing his music with the symbiosis of natural beauty and sleepless machines. Nathan is known for using intimate organic voices like guitars, strings, woodwinds and piano intertwined with abstracted natural sounds as an eclectic palette to craft thematically-driven film scores for stories about human conviction.
In 2020 Nathan was tapped to collaborate with composer Brian Tyler on the creation of the ethereal indie guitar-driven score for the Disney biopic Clouds about late singer-songwriter Zach Sobiech, in addition to arranging and performing on some of Zach’s original music for the film. Nathan has since contributed music to blockbuster films including 2023’s smash hits The Super Mario Bros. movie and Fast X, Scream V, Chip N’ Dale Rescue Rangers, as well as the theme and co-score to Apple+’s docuseries The Big Conn. Most recently in 2024, Nathan composed the score for Justin Lin’s upcoming biopic Last Days about the fate of John Allen Chau, which will premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
